2. _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n__I_n_f_o_r_m_a_t_i_o_n
This chapter lists supplemental information to the _I_R_I_Sr
_S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e. The information listed here is
product-specific; use it with the installation guide to
install this product.
2.1 _N_F_S__S_u_b_s_y_s_t_e_m_s
Following is a description of the NFS subsystems:
_n_f_s._s_w._n_f_s NFS version 2 and version 3
client, NFS version 2 and
version 3 server software, and
network lock manager software
_n_f_s._s_w._n_i_s Unified Name Service and NIS
(formerly YP) distributed
information software
_n_f_s._s_w._a_u_t_o_f_s Automount File System software.
_n_f_s._s_w._c_a_c_h_e_f_s Cache File System software.
_n_f_s._s_w._d_s_k_l_e_s_s__c_l_i_e_n_t Software that implements
diskless client services. Do
NOT install this subsystem on
diskfull systems.
_n_f_s._s_w._d_s_k_l_e_s_s__s_e_r_v_e_r Software that implements
diskless server services. This
includes software to install
diskless clients. See
eoe2.books.Diskless_AG for
installation procedures.
_n_f_s._b_o_o_k_s._N_F_S__A_G The NFS Administration Guide
_n_f_s._b_o_o_k_s._N_I_S__A_G The NIS Administration Guide

lockd, AutoFS and CacheFS.
_n_f_s._m_a_n._r_e_l_n_o_t_e_s Release notes (this document).
2.2 _N_F_S__S_u_b_s_y_s_t_e_m__D_i_s_k__U_s_e
This section lists the NFS option subsystems and their
sizes. Those subsystems marked ``default'' are selected for
installation in the distribution software. If you are
installing NFS software for the first time, these subsystems
- 2 -
are installed if you use the ``go'' menu item from _i_n_s_t. To
select a different set of subsystems for installation, use
_i_n_s_t's ``install,'' ``remove,'' ``keep,'' and ``step''
commands to customize the selection list. Then, use the
``go'' menu item to install the selected subsystems.
Note: The listed subsystem sizes are approximate. Refer to
the _I_R_I_S _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for information
on finding exact sizes.

subsystems. Refer to the _I_R_I_S _S_o_f_t_w_a_r_e _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e
for complete installation instructions.

2.4 _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s
Your workstation must be running at least release IRIX 6.5
to use NFS release 6.5. The _n_f_s._s_w._n_f_s and _n_f_s._s_w._n_f_s
subsystems are prerequisites for running the
_n_f_s._s_w._d_s_k_l_e_s_s__c_l_i_e_n_t and _n_f_s._s_w._d_s_k_l_e_s_s__s_e_r_v_e_r subsystems.
NFS file and record locking support is now contained in
_n_f_s._s_w._n_f_s. The network lock manager now supports versions
1, 3 and 4 of NLM protocol.
2.5 _C_o_m_p_a_t_i_b_i_l_i_t_y__f_o_r__D_i_s_k_l_e_s_s__S_y_s_t_e_m_s
A server must be running IRIX 6.2 (or higher) to support
IRIX 6.2 clients. Servers running IRIX 6.2 can support IRIX
5.X clients, but cannot support IRIX 4.0.x clients.
2.6 _I_n_s_t_a_l_l_i_n_g__G_a_l_i_l_e_o__B_o_a_r_d_s
A Galileo board functions as a separate hardware option in a
client workstation rather than as an integral component of
the workstation's graphics subsystem. For this reason, you
do not need to set an architectural variable for clients
containing a Galileo board.
2.7 _C_o_n_f_i_g_u_r_a_t_i_o_n__F_i_l_e_s
This section lists installed files that can be edited to
contain site-specific changes. Please see the _N_F_S
_A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e and the _N_I_S _A_d_m_i_n_i_s_t_r_a_t_i_o_n _G_u_i_d_e for
details.
The following configuration files determine if a daemon is
started during system initialization. A daemon or subsystem
is enabled if its configuration flag in the /_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g
directory is in the ``on'' state. Use the _c_h_k_c_o_n_f_i_g(1M)
command to turn a flag on or off.
- 4 -
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_a_u_t_o_f_s Start _a_u_t_o_f_s_d(1M) and run
_a_u_t_o_f_s(1M). This overrides the
automount configuration flag.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_a_u_t_o_m_o_u_n_t Start _a_u_t_o_m_o_u_n_t(1M).
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_l_o_c_k_d Start _l_o_c_k_d(1M) and _s_t_a_t_d(1M).
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_n_f_s Start the NFS daemons, export
file systems listed in
/_e_t_c/_e_x_p_o_r_t_s, and mount the NFS
file systems listed in
/_e_t_c/_f_s_t_a_b.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_y_p Start the NIS daemon(s).
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_y_p_m_a_s_t_e_r Become the NIS master server.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_y_p_s_e_r_v Become an NIS slave server.
Change the following files to reflect your site's setup.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_a_u_t_o_f_s._o_p_t_i_o_n_s Site-specific options for autofs.
/_e_t_c/_a_u_t_o__m_a_s_t_e_r Master map configuration for
autofs.
/_e_t_c/_c_o_n_f_i_g/_a_u_t_o_m_o_u_n_t._o_p_t_i_o_n_s Site-specific options for
automount. Contains a default
configuration.
/_e_t_c/_b_o_o_t_p_a_r_a_m_s Database for _b_o_o_t_p_a_r_a_m_d(1M).

exported.
/_e_t_c/_n_e_t_g_r_o_u_p List of NIS network groups.
The following files are used by the NIS software.
/_v_a_r/_y_p/_m_a_k_e._s_c_r_i_p_t Makefile used by _y_p_m_a_k_e to create
NIS databases on the master
server.
/_v_a_r/_y_p/_y_p_m_a_k_e Shell script that uses
_m_a_k_e._s_c_r_i_p_t to create NIS
- 5 -
databases on the master.
/_v_a_r/_y_p/_y_p_x_f_r__1_p_d Shell script to transfer NIS maps
once per day (slave servers
only).
/_v_a_r/_y_p/_y_p_x_f_r__1_p_h Shell script to transfer NIS maps
once per hour (slave servers
only).
/_v_a_r/_y_p/_y_p_x_f_r__2_p_d Shell script to transfer NIS maps
twice per day (slave servers
only).
The following files are used by Diskless Workstation
software:
